Together We Make a Difference

Maryland Horse Rescue started more than fifteen years ago to address the need for a rescue that would take in equines from any situation.

Our Mission

Our founder’s first horse came from a badly abusive situation, but despite his horrible past, she taught him to become rideable. As years passed, she grew more and more disheartened as she watched people buy and sell horses like used appliances; it just didn’t seem right. The search for the elusive “perfect” horse meant many horses were being thrown away for minor defects that could be fixed. She found this tragic and it just seemed to her that someone needed to act as a safety “Net” for those horses, so “HorseNet” was born. In 2016 HorseNet Horse Rescue was rebranded as Maryland Horse Rescue. Our mission is still the same,  to facilitate the rescue, rehabilitation, and rehoming of abused and abandoned horses in Maryland.

We firmly believe that every horse can perform a job of some kind, no matter what their limitation, and that they all deserve a second chance. This is the basis on which Maryland Horse Rescue will continue.

Maryland Horse Rescue is a certified 501 (c)(3) nonprofit located in Mt Airy, Maryland. We DO NOT sell horses, but facilitate the rescue, rehabilitation and rehoming of those animals in our care. We do have some long term residents, but strive to adopt out as many animals as possible to loving informed homes.

We are 100% volunteer run and operate solely on donations.

We specialize in senior care, but will accept equines from any state animal control facility in any condition including: abuse, neglect, financial hardship, death in family, family illness, animal retiring from lesson program, police force, or racetrack, and/or any other situation not mentioned above. We do not accept owner surrenders. We are here to help, not judge, and will accept any equine in need.

At this time, we are not taking in any new horses as we are at capacity.

OUR BOARD MEMBERS

Melanie Biemiller

President

Melanie Biemiller grew up in Northern Baltimore Co and has had a lifelong love of horses. In 2006 Melanie and her then middle school aged daughter began volunteering with the then named HorseNet Horse Rescue. Melanie worked her way up from a one day a week volunteer to barn manager to her current position as Executive Director.

Vice President

Michelle Kegel

Treasurer

Michelle has been a volunteer with the rescue since 2004. She has an extensive background in horse care and rescue operations. Michelle has happily held nearly every position at the rescue; and now since starting her own family keeps her from daily farm chores, she continues to volunteer remotely with our accounting needs.

Tina Davis

Secretary

Tina grew up in Sharpsburg, MD and has had a life long love for rescue horses and Arabians. She has rescued two horses from kill pens and was also the ``angel`` who transported Tucker from his abandoned farm to Maryland Horse Rescue. She enjoys getting to know the different personalities and qualities of the horses she meets. They all have a soft spot, you just have to find it.
